What do we see when we look?

The Department of Political and Cultural Studies of the Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University once again gives intellectual joy to teachers, graduate students and students not only of its own university but also of other universities in Ukraine. This time, it is a reflection on the problem of the adequacy of our worldview and world understanding together with the esteemed lecturer Lidiia Starodubtseva, Head of the Department of Media Communications, Professor of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Lidiia Starodubtseva is a cultural historian, media expert, art curator, author and host of a series of TV programs (Tea Ceremony, Dialogues, Art Questioning), radio and TV journalist, journalist of the program “Beyond Barriers” of Radio Liberty (Prague), scriptwriter, producer and director of a series of short films created together with Ihor Pomerantsev, co-produced by Radio Liberty (USA) and Media Topos Films (Ukraine), a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, the European Media Union, author of 6 books and more than 200 publications, editor-in-chief of a series of cultural publications, organizer of a number of communication projects aimed at interdisciplinary integration (Polylog, UnVacuum, El Topos).

The topic of the lecture, “Anamorphosis: Reflections on Point of View and Distance,” is as profound as the lecturer herself and is relevant at all times, especially in today’s fast-paced and multimedia-saturated world.

In her lecture, Lidiia Starodubtseva raised and tried to reveal a question that is very important for the nature of every person’s life: do we see the real world and events in it, or do we only see images of reality and events distorted by us or those who give us information (various mediators)?
